Friend destroys wheeler

October 24, 2020

My friend borrowed my truck and trailer to take his four-wheeler out riding with his kids. Somewhere along the way he ended up rolling it by doing a cookie in the middle of the road. Luckily the kids weren’t on it when this happened.

In the process of rolling it his $300 gauge cluster got broken beyond repair & will need replaced. Doubtful however that he will replace it.

The following day my same friend ended up losing control of his four-wheeler due to no brakes and drove his wheeler through a steel cattle gate, and it went down a hill about 100 yards dead on into a tree.

Luckily he was able to jump off shortly after going through the steel cattle gate but I bet he was sore the very next day.

We were intending to repair the brakes but he insisted on driving it before we were able to order the parts to repair the brakes which in my opinion is very dumb and I personally wouldn’t of attempted that.

Luckily for the four-wheeler he didn’t have the front plastic on it at the time but he did wreck it enough to cause it to be disabled and essentially unmovable.

We were able to drive it back up out of the timber by using a ratchet strap to hold the shock mount to the frame. At the top of the hill we put it on a trailer which was being pulled by my four-wheeler.

Four-Wheeler Damage

The Four-wheeler is a 2004 Polaris Sportsman 4×4 700 and the damage to the four-wheeler is somewhat extreme though not impossible to fix. I summed up the overall damage to be somewhere in the range of $500.

We made a deal that if he gave me his aftermarket steel brush guard and bumper that I would buy some parts to get it moving again. He stated he wasn’t going to re-install the steel brush guard anyways. Honestly, I think he needs that more than I do but that’s beside the point.

Here are the parts I ordered to fix his four-wheeler.

  • Front Right A-Arm
  • Front Right Ball Joint
  • Front Right Axle
  • Rear Brake Caliper
  • Brake Pads

Other parts that got damaged but I didn’t order.

  • Front fiberglass bumper
    • which houses the headlights.
  • Right fiberglass Foot Floor Panel
  • Gauge Cluster
    • This was busted on Oct 24th

Other parts it might need.

  • Radiator
    • Has some damage but isn’t leaking currently.

The goal is to put the parts I ordered on the four-wheeler, bleed the brakes and get them working again before driving it again which is a smart plan if he sticks to it.

The reason I didn’t order everything that he has broken is because it would be cost more than the brush guard is worth that he gave me to install on my wheeler. Fixing the rest is on him.

Now for the photos of the aftermath between both accidents he has had with this thing.

Loaning out my truck

After all of this stuff happened I’m really debating how great of an idea it is to loan out my truck to well, anybody as I do not want that thing destroyed as well. I know some of you might be making fun of me for “babying” my truck but I don’t care. I have driven junk vehicles for years and I finally decided that I wanted at least one nice vehicle in my arsenal.

If I decide in the future to go off-roading then I’ll buy some rust bucket to do that in and have fun tearing it up on purpose.

Anyways, I did watch my dash camera footage on Oct, 24 and he did at least drive my truck with care and even did the speed limit so I’m happy to see he wasn’t beating up my truck when he borrowed it.

I wonder if a 2020 four-wheeler would be as easy to fix (and at the same cost) as that 2004 model. As for loaning out your truck that may be a bad idea. Here in Florida a vehicle owner can be sued for damages and injuries incurred by someone driving your vehicle even though you gave them permission.

I’m really not sure how difficult it would be to fix a 2020 model vs a 2004 model. I currently have the exact same wheeler my friend has and it’s fairly inexpensive to fix. My wheeler like his is Yellow however, same year and model.

I’ll have to research the vehicle laws in Iowa.
