If you haven’t installed Windows 10 yet on your computer you might want to start doing it soon before the free upgrade to Windows 10 expires. Below I have outlined 3 different methods I have used to update computers to Windows 10.

Method 1

Go here and download and run installer.

Method 2 (Force it)

Follow the steps below to force it to install.

First, navigate to “C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download” (you may need to replace C: with a different drive letter if you installed Windows elsewhere) and delete all the files there. This will give Windows Update a clean slate.

Open Windows Update by hitting the Windows key, typing “Windows Update” and clicking on it.

Open up the command prompt by hitting the Windows key and typing in cmd. Don’t hit enter. Right click and choose “Run as administrator.”

Type (but do not enter yet) “wuauclt.exe /updatenow” — this is the command to force Windows Update to check for updates.

Back in the Windows Update window, click “Check for updates” on the left hand side. It should say “Checking for updates…”

While this is happening, switch back to the command prompt and enter the command you already typed in.

You should now see Windows Update say that it is downloading Windows 10. Before you actually install it though, back everything up and make sure you’re ready.

Method 3

Visit this link and under where it says “Need to create a USB, DVD or ISO?” click download tool now

Once the tool is downloaded you need to run it, it will ask you two questions & you should pick “Upgrade this machine” afterwards It will walk you through the install process

I hope this was helpful to you guys. If you still have problems then you need to contact Microsoft to sort them out.

Problems I ran into while Updating Windows 10

Problems using Method 1

If you get this error you are pretty much hosed on using Method 1

Problems using Method 2

If you get error 80240020 like I did while during the windows 10 download and install process then simply repeat the steps above and try again..

Got stuck at Check your PC before upgrading.

Problems using Method 3

I haven’t been able to work past this error yet..

I get people coming to me all the time especially at work because their headset or speakers aren’t working in Windows. Many end users have called it a “Technical” issue which it really isn’t. More times than not this is a very simple fix which can be resolved by the end user themselves but most of them simply do not understand how to fix it themselves.

First thing to do is to open up the Playback devices in Windows

Go to Start ► Control Panel ► Sound ► Playback Tab and then adjust which one u wish to be the default.

Alternative Method: Bottom right of start bar ► Look for Speaker icon ► right click speaker icon and click playback options

Now once you are in the Playback Devices window select the device u want to set as your default playback device and click set default.

9 times out of 10 this will fix your playback issue. The only time this won’t fix it is if you have some sort of audio driver issue that needs to be sorted out further or if the playback device in question isn’t working properly.
The post Adjust Windows Playback Options first appeared on Matt Crawford.

This guide talks about how to setup Budabot in linux. Budabot is a organization bot for the game Anarchy Online. If you don’t play that game then you don’t need to setup a bot. This can be setup in windows too but I prefer linux.

The steps below are assuming you have already created a new character and joined it to your org if you decided to do so.

Download Budabot from here

Unzip the files.

Find chatbot.bat and double click it.

It will ask you a series of questions. Just follow the prompts

Once you are finished it will automatically start up.

Configure the bot after it’s been created

Open the location where you saved your bot files.

Open the conf folder

right click the config.php file and click open with and choose notepad

This is where you can edit all the bot configurations.

Start the Bot

Open the location where you saved your bot

Double click on chatbot.bat file

It will open a CMD window where the bot will run from. Do not close the box otherwise the bot will stop working.

Have you recently did a in-place upgrade on your windows system but now want to remove the windows.old folder?

Well this is the proper way to remove windows.old without causing a bunch of issues.

First download junction.exe from sysinternals, Extract it to c:tools (create folder if it doesn’t exist)

Open a cmd prompt as admin and run the following:

c:\tools\junction.exe -s -q C:windows.old > %temp%junc.txt

When that is finished open power shell by typing the following in the cmd window

start powershell.exe

then run this powershell script which removes all the junction points

foreach ($line in [System.IO.File]::ReadLines("$env:tempjunc.txt"))
{
     if ($line -match "^\\")
     {
         $file = $line -replace "(: JUNCTION)|(: SYMBOLIC LINK)",""
         & c:\tools\junction.exe -d "$file"
     }
}

switch back to cmd.exe window and run the following 3 commands

takeown /F C:\windows.old /R /D Y
cacls C:\windows.old /T /G Everyone:F
rd /s /q C:\windows.old

Now the windows.old folder should be deleted.

Update: There is an easier method than doing all the steps listed above. Follow this guide.
The post Delete Windows.old first appeared on Matt Crawford.

I have windows 10 at home on my laptop and in a home environment it seems fine though it can be a bit sluggish at times, and unstable as this article suggests. I’ve been tempted to upgrade my windows 8.1 pro machine at home to Windows 10 but I haven’t and probably won’t after my experiences with it at work which I will explain below.

In fact I’m actually looking for ways to uninstall all windows os from my home computers and resort to using Linux and hopefully get wine working for the few windows programs that I do need but that’s a different story.

Windows 10 on a domain environment is pretty horrible for many reasons:

Windows 10 keeps locking out my credentials and I can’t access anything on the domain until I lock the pc and log back in. (this happens several times a day)

The message it pops up on the bottom right is “Windows needs your current credentials please lock this computer”

I often lose access to Dept_Shares and access to other servers even after fixing the error I explained above.

More times than not I cannot access the SQL servers such as dev1 or db0 through Access or SQL Server management studio until I restart.

Windows 10 will update the computer whenever it feels like and will do reboots as well.

Start menu is better but is still left to be desired by some. Plus many of the apps aren’t really work appropriate.

If you do decide to use any of the apps then Windows will try to make you login with a Microsoft account vs a domain login. There are ways around it but it’s not straight forward.

Windows 10 has a lot of privacy issues and if you don’t uncheck all the privacy settings the Microsoft basically logs everything you do on the computer and can even log keystrokes.

I’ve had issues where my services.msc and gpedit.msc window went completely blank after installing McAfee Agent 5.0 which is supposed to support Windows 10 for our Anti-virus. After restoring from a previous point where I didn’t have McAfee the issue was resolved.

While I did get McAfee Agent 5.0 installed I never did get Virus Scan installed yet due to how unstable Windows 10 is after installing the agent.

There might be other problems I had that I forgot to mention here but bottom line is I ditched my Windows 10 machine at work and went back to Windows 8.1 Pro.
The post Windows 10 Unstable in a domain enviroment first appeared on Matt Crawford.

Today is July 29th and is the day when Microsoft has released Windows 10 updates. The updates will be a rolling update meaning not everybody will get the update right away but I have found a way to force these updates if you don’t want to wait.

*Edit* Found a faster and better way to upgrade than using the steps below. All you simply have to do is visit THIS LINK and download the installer which allows you to install windows 10 on the fly or burn a ISO image for fresh install.

Follow the steps below to start upgrading now and skip the wait.

First, navigate to “C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionDownload” (you may need to replace C: with a different drive letter if you installed Windows elsewhere) and delete all the files there.

If you get error 80240020 like I did while during the windows 10 download and install process then simply repeat the steps above and try again..

Enjoy Windows 10 kiddos.
The post Windows 10 Released first appeared on Matt Crawford.

Have you ever had a windows update stuck at 0% for a extended period of time? Well I’m sure you have as I know I personally have had that issue lots of times during my career as a sysadmin over the years.

Well this post explains how to solve that annoying issue!

Step 1

Press Windows + R. This will prompt a run dialogue box. In here type, services.msc

Step 2

Now it brings us to all the services installed in Windows. These services are listed in alphabetical order. Scroll down and look for Windows Update Service. Right click on it and stop it.

Step 3

Now go in C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution and delete all of its contents. Actually, this is the folder where downloaded installation files were stored. But since Windows update suck, they somehow have problem with partially downloaded update files.

Step 4

Go back to services again (as mentioned in Step 1) and this time start the Windows Update Service, by right clicking on it. Try to update Windows again. It should be working this time.

Those who really know me in real life know that I work for a company as a Systems Administrator/User Support so I have to be on the up and up with systems and networks as they become available. I took the liberty of installing the Windows 10 Technical Preview on a virtual server on our network where I work so I can get a glimpse of what to expect in Windows 10.

This test was done using Windows 10 Pro Technical Preview Build:9926.
You may notice that IE still exists on this build and that is because Project Spartan is not yet supported for this build of Windows 10.

So here is a list of changes I have noticed:

New Start Menu

Metro Apps on Desktop

Option of using Virtual Desktops

New Task View Button

New Icons for File Explorer

New Settings Screen

Here is a list of supposedly proposed changes to come:

Desktop Interface Overhaul to appear flatter.

Improved Snapping.

The Metro interface may be removed.

Charms bar is being removed from the desktop.

ReFS file system – Self repairing file system

Replace IE with a new browser currently code named Project Spartan.

My Thoughts:

Windows 10 has some nice improvements but I’m still not a fan of the start menu because it lists “all apps” and still doesn’t list all programs like we have had in Windows 7 which is a much better way of doing things.

In all honestly I don’t really care about Windows Apps nor will I probably ever want to use Windows Apps.

When you first install Windows 10 they are pretty insistent on you signing in with your Microsoft account. Quite honestly, I have never use a Microsoft account for any of my Windows 8 machines and I don’t plan to start with Windows 10.

OneDrive is baked into Windows 10 like Windows 8 as an app which is really annoying. I’d rather be able to have the option to have One Drive as an app or a normal program.

I just hope Startisback.com has a solution for Windows 10 so I can keep using a Windows 7 like start menu.

Robocopy is a robust file copy system that is built into windows which allows you to copy and move files with the permissions and shares intact.

Robocopy is noted for capabilities above and beyond the built-in Windows copy and xcopy commands, including the following:

Ability to tolerate network interruptions and resume copying. (incomplete files are marked with a date stamp of 1980-01-01 and contain a recovery record so Robocopy knows where to continue from)

Ability to skip NTFS junction points which can cause copying failures because of infinite loops (
/XJ
)

Ability to copy file data and attributes correctly, and to preserve original timestamps, as well as NTFS ACLs, owner information, and audit information using command line switches. (
/COPYALL
or
/COPY:
) Copying folder timestamps is also possible in later versions (
/DCOPY:T
).

Ability to assert the Windows NT “backup right” (
/B
) so an administrator may copy an entire directory, including files denied readability to the administrator.

Persistence by default, with a programmable number of automatic retries if a file cannot be opened.

A “mirror” mode, which keeps trees in sync by optionally deleting files out of the destination that are no longer present in the source.

Ability to skip files that already appear in the destination folder with identical size and timestamp.

A continuously updated command-line progress indicator.

Ability to copy file and folder names exceeding 256 characters — up to a theoretical limit of 32,000 characters — without errors.[1]

Multithreaded copying. (Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2) [2]

Return code[3] on program termination for batch file usage.

Today I’m going to show you how I use robocopy and a script that I found that works for me.

I like to save the following code as a .bat file so I can run it easily as an administrator.

@echo off

SET SORC=”D:Test Copy”
SET DEST=”D:Companyshareshared”
SET LOG=”D:Companysharesharedcopylog.log”

ROBOCOPY %SORC% %DEST% /E /ZB /DCOPY:T /COPYALL /R:1 /W:1 /V /TEE /LOG:%LOG%

:END
pause

The above code will copy subdirectories, time stamps, ntfs access controls, etc.

To learn more about what the above code means visit this link.

Hope this is helpful to anybody using this robust copy tool
The post Robocopy first appeared on Matt Crawford.
