If you know anything about the internet and some of the little tricks that hackers use to gain access to your personal accounts then I’m sure you have heard of the term “Phishing“. If you haven’t then I suggest you read up on this article because I’m not going to go into great detail explaining what it is in this post.

What I will do today is share with you guys a little trick that I’ve seen “hackers” (if you can even call it hacking) using lately to trick users into handing over their password.

In this example somebody at work got this e-mail with an attachment named “PI Order.html” and asked me if it’s safe to open. After I carefully examined the .html code of the page i discovered it’s Login form that is attempting to look like OneDrive and when somebody enters their login credentials for one drive it sends that information back to the “hacker” so they can login and steal your account. Aka this is a act of Phishing.

This is what the e-mail looked like in the user’s inbox:

Here is the code of the fake website.

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd”>
function validateForm() {
var x = document.forms[“onedrive”][“email”].value;
</div>

<br>

<br>

</body></html>

And this is what the page looked liked when opened.

Conclusion

As you can see this is a very poor attempt by the “hacker” to fake the login page for OneDrive but I give them Kudos for at least trying I guess. At least now my readers know what to look out for if they see similar e-mails in their inbox.

Maybe next time the “hackers” will actually make sure the images are linked correctly to an actual online image vs a local image that wasn’t included in the e-mail.
The post Phishing E-mails first appeared on Matt Crawford.

If you have Skype then I’m sure by now you have noticed the slew of sex bots and scammers who try to add you as friends or send you messages out of the blue.

Screenshot

Normally I wouldn’t create a whole blog post about such annoying behavior but today I got one that involves a money scam. This is the same sort of scam that I have seen in e-mails so I figured it was worth a mention to point out that it’s a scam for the mentally challenged.

So you can see I took a screenshot of the scam message on the left of this message and this is what it read in full detail:

*** Dear Crawford,

I am Andrew Mortimer,Chief Operating Officer and Country Manager,Barclays Bank United Arab Emirates.I write you this proposal in good faith hoping that I will rely on you for a business transaction that requires absolute confidentiality and also of great interest and benefit to our both families.

In 2007,one Mr. Weimin Crawford,an Emirati Citizen whose surname is same as yours and has your country in his file as his place of origin, made a fixed deposit for 36 months, valued at $26,700,000.00 with my bank. I was his account officer before I rose to the position of Managing Director. The maturity date for this deposit contract was 25th of September 2010.Sadly Mr. Weimin was among the death victims in the September 2009 earthquake in Indonesia that left over 1,200 people dead while he was there on a business trip.

Since the last quarter of 2010 till date, the management of my bank has been finding means to reach him so as to ascertain if he will roll over the Deposit or have the contract sum withdrawn. When I discovered that this will happen, I have tried to think of a procedure to preserve this fund and use the proceeds for business.

Some directors here have been trying to find out from me the information about this account and the owner, but I have kept it closed because, I know that if they become aware that Mr. Weimin is late, they will corner the funds for themselves knowing he has no next of kin to inherit the funds. Therefore, am seeking your co-operation to present you as the one to benefit from his fund at his death since you have the same name, so that my bank headquarters will pay the funds to you. I have done enough inside bank arrangement and I only have to put in your details into the information network in the bank computer system to reflect you as his next of kin.

If you concur with this proposal, I intend for you to retain 50% of the funds while 50% shall be for me. Kindly forward your response to me via my email address, andrewmortimer80@gmail.com

Andrew Mortimer
Managing Director,
Chief Operating Officer and Country Manager, Middle East,Barclays Plc
andrewmortimer80@gmail.com ***

As you can see this is clearly a scam or money laundering scheme. What it comes down to is they want to send me a check or money order (which probably is no good) and have me deposit it into my account and give them half of said funds where I would “get to keep” the other half.

The truth is the check or money order is probably a fake and would bounce where there after my bank would expect me to fork over $26,700.700.00 that never existed in the first place and I would be further in debt because of it. Scams like this would potentially financially destroy any normal hard working person’s credit and money that they actually earned the legal way.

In other words, don’t be an idiot and fall for scams like this. You won’t benefit anything in the end.
The post Skype Spam/Scammers first appeared on Matt Crawford.
