If you haven’t installed Windows 10 yet on your computer you might want to start doing it soon before the free upgrade to Windows 10 expires. Below I have outlined 3 different methods I have used to update computers to Windows 10.

Method 1

Go here and download and run installer.

Method 2 (Force it)

Follow the steps below to force it to install.

First, navigate to “C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download” (you may need to replace C: with a different drive letter if you installed Windows elsewhere) and delete all the files there. This will give Windows Update a clean slate.

Open Windows Update by hitting the Windows key, typing “Windows Update” and clicking on it.

Open up the command prompt by hitting the Windows key and typing in cmd. Don’t hit enter. Right click and choose “Run as administrator.”

Type (but do not enter yet) “wuauclt.exe /updatenow” — this is the command to force Windows Update to check for updates.

Back in the Windows Update window, click “Check for updates” on the left hand side. It should say “Checking for updates…”

While this is happening, switch back to the command prompt and enter the command you already typed in.

You should now see Windows Update say that it is downloading Windows 10. Before you actually install it though, back everything up and make sure you’re ready.

Method 3

Visit this link and under where it says “Need to create a USB, DVD or ISO?” click download tool now

Once the tool is downloaded you need to run it, it will ask you two questions & you should pick “Upgrade this machine” afterwards It will walk you through the install process

I hope this was helpful to you guys. If you still have problems then you need to contact Microsoft to sort them out.

Problems I ran into while Updating Windows 10

Problems using Method 1

If you get this error you are pretty much hosed on using Method 1

Problems using Method 2

If you get error 80240020 like I did while during the windows 10 download and install process then simply repeat the steps above and try again..

Got stuck at Check your PC before upgrading.

Problems using Method 3

I haven’t been able to work past this error yet..

Who knew that trying to get Sharepoint and their edit in excel feature would be such a pain to get working correctly. This is one of the many tasks I worked on today at work and I wanted to share my experience with it with my viewers here. With that said, here is how I got it working.

The Fix

First go to Control Panel àInternet Options > trusted sites ? and add your URL for Sharepoint.

Then login to your SharePoint (I used Firefox) and pick a document from > Documents > all > and I picked one at random that was an excel document

Once it opens click > Edit workbook > Edit in Excel > which should start to open the document in your local copy of excel (If you get a message about it being blocked click allow and allow and remember.)

But wait, I got this popup (which is actually an add-on for Excel). Help Document Link
So I just went ahead and picked the top option “Microsoft Office 2016” in my case (I wouldn’t use Choose and then pick Excel because that causes other issues.)

After I did that Microsoft Office asked me for a username and password to sign in.
So at the sign in screen I entered my e-mail that I use with Sharepoint
Which prompted this next screenshot. Maggie uses a Microsoft account where I use a work account so it’s important to choose the right type of account.
After you pick the right account type and sign in with the same information you use for Sharepoint and then the document should magically open.
The post Sharepoint Edit In Excel first appeared on Matt Crawford.

I have windows 10 at home on my laptop and in a home environment it seems fine though it can be a bit sluggish at times, and unstable as this article suggests. I’ve been tempted to upgrade my windows 8.1 pro machine at home to Windows 10 but I haven’t and probably won’t after my experiences with it at work which I will explain below.

In fact I’m actually looking for ways to uninstall all windows os from my home computers and resort to using Linux and hopefully get wine working for the few windows programs that I do need but that’s a different story.

Windows 10 on a domain environment is pretty horrible for many reasons:

Windows 10 keeps locking out my credentials and I can’t access anything on the domain until I lock the pc and log back in. (this happens several times a day)

The message it pops up on the bottom right is “Windows needs your current credentials please lock this computer”

I often lose access to Dept_Shares and access to other servers even after fixing the error I explained above.

More times than not I cannot access the SQL servers such as dev1 or db0 through Access or SQL Server management studio until I restart.

Windows 10 will update the computer whenever it feels like and will do reboots as well.

Start menu is better but is still left to be desired by some. Plus many of the apps aren’t really work appropriate.

If you do decide to use any of the apps then Windows will try to make you login with a Microsoft account vs a domain login. There are ways around it but it’s not straight forward.

Windows 10 has a lot of privacy issues and if you don’t uncheck all the privacy settings the Microsoft basically logs everything you do on the computer and can even log keystrokes.

I’ve had issues where my services.msc and gpedit.msc window went completely blank after installing McAfee Agent 5.0 which is supposed to support Windows 10 for our Anti-virus. After restoring from a previous point where I didn’t have McAfee the issue was resolved.

While I did get McAfee Agent 5.0 installed I never did get Virus Scan installed yet due to how unstable Windows 10 is after installing the agent.

There might be other problems I had that I forgot to mention here but bottom line is I ditched my Windows 10 machine at work and went back to Windows 8.1 Pro.
The post Windows 10 Unstable in a domain enviroment first appeared on Matt Crawford.

I’m rather upset to learn that with Windows 10 the OS is likely to become a subscription based service that you will pay for monthly or possibly yearly at a time.

Yes they do plan to give us a free upgrade to Windows 10 when it comes out for the first year but after that we have to start paying subscription charges from what I understand. Microsoft hasn’t released details as to what they plan to charge for this subscription service to use Windows 10 but I suspect that a lot of people will not want to use it and will probably stick to Windows 8.1 or earlier versions of windows as long as they can before they switch to Linux or some ot her OS.

Personally myself, I’ve already started using Linux more and plan to learn more about it so I can make the switch eventually. Currently though I still use Windows OS at my job, for my photography and for gaming. Other than that I could switch to Linux full time and be happy.

Read this interesting article at Tech Crunch for more details about Windows 10
The post Windows 10, The OS becomes a Service first appeared on Matt Crawford.

In fact when loading up my Outlook.com e-mail account I notice that I found 3 different trackers in the e-mail service and on top of that I blocked 6 different ad services as well.

The three trackers I found are:

Atlas

BlueKai

Media Optimizer

I found zero trackers and zero ads in Gmail account when I loaded that!

So not only is Microsoft trying to make Google’s gmail service look bad, they are also flat out lying to it’s end users about what they do or do not do.

Makes you wonder if Microsoft really does have backdoors into all Windows machines as well like many claims say they do.

I would switch to Linux in a heartbeat if my video games worked with Linux. I’m honestly sick of giving money to the greedy bastards at Microshit
The post Outlook.com Revealed first appeared on Matt Crawford.

Today marks the day when Microsoft has stopped the support for Windows XP.

This means Windows XP has been alive for 12 years but Microsoft felt it was time for them to end support for XP and Office 2003.

What this means for you is

No more Automatic Windows Updates

Microsoft Security Essentials will not have future downloads available.

Your computer will still work but you will become vulnerable to security risks and viruses

Internet Explorer 8 is no longer supported

Eventually you may encounter more apps and devices that do not work with XP.

Office 2003 is no longer supported

Microsoft basically left xp users with two options.

Upgrade your current OS

Upgrade your computer to newer hardware if your current computer doesn’t support anything higher than xp.

Here is Microsoft’s post on this topic.
